Fondant : dans ce temps suspendu et transitoire, l’espace du Panorama se fait boudoir kaléidoscopique d’un avant fait après, d’une scène à venir pourtant révolue, de plaisirs obsédés d’objets désirants. 

Confiseries, glaçages, moiteurs, fluides, fusions, laves… Le titre et ses connotations donnent le ton du spectacle figé qu’orchestre Zoe Williams. Pris dans une croute luisante, un cœur mielleux n’attend qu’à se répandre. Les images que convoquent ce titre annoncent les thèmes récurrents de l’artiste : le goût, l’excès, l’érotisme, les flammes, les marges et donc les politiques sexuelles, les enjeux symboliques de pouvoir et de domination, la consommation et l’économie des biens.

Fondant est autant une exposition qu’une mise en scène explorant les notions d’artifice, de camp et de classe à travers les interactions parfois forcées du décor et des corps qui s’y adonnent : témoins, complices, voyeurs et victimes.  

La cérémonie : l’espace devient une atmosphère. Des miroirs en céramique aux reflets aveugles entourent un lit, l’immensité du Panorama se change en lieu intime plongé dans le vide : une chambre trouble. Un rideau enveloppe la fenêtre rougeoyante, des sculptures émaillées, des objets fortement connotés, des photographies équivoques, un parfum capiteux, un soundtrack de Vindicatrix entêtant remplissent l’espace et le mettent en scène. Zoe Williams rejoue la théâtralité inhérente à son travail pour construire une installation cinématographique dans laquelle on se fait l’acteur d’une scène de crime, d’un shooting de mode, d’un peepshow, d’un drame défragmenté – de tout cela à la fois. 

Zoe Williams a conçu ce projet spécifiquement pour le Panorama invitée par Fræme. Elle a produit les œuvres pour le site, en partie en résidence à la Villa Arson, Nice, au Studio Ernan Design, Albisola (Italie) et à Marseille. Fondant est la première exposition monographique de l’artiste dans une institution française.

Fondant: existing within a suspended and transitory moment, the Panorama space becomes a kaleidoscopic boudoir for a past made after, the setting for a scene which is both anticipated and already over, for the pleasures obsessed by desirous objects.

Confectionary, icing, moistness, fluids, fusions, lavas… The title and its connotations set the tone for the frozen spectacle orchestrated by Zoe Williams. Caught in a glistening crust, a honeyed heart is just waiting to spread. The images carried by the title announce the recurrent themes of the artist: taste, excess, eroticism, flames, the margins and therefore sexual politics, symbolic stakes of power and domination, consumption, and the economy of goods.

Fondant is simultaneously an exhibition and a scene exploring notions of artifice, camp, and class through sometimes forced interactions between the set and the bodies that engage with it, who are cast as: witnesses, accomplices, voyeurs and victims.

The ceremony: the space becomes an atmosphere. Ceramic mirrors with blind reflections surround a bed, the immensity of the Panorama transforms into an intimate space plunged into the void: a troubled bedroom. A huge curtain envelops the glowing red window, glazed ceramics, highly suggestive objects, uneasy photographs, a heady perfume, and a haunting soundtrack by Vindicatrix fill the space and set the scene. Zoe Williams re-enacts the theatricality inherent in her work to construct a cinematic installation in which one simultaneously becomes an actor in a crime scene, a fashion shoot, a peepshow or a fragmented drama.

Zoe Williams conceived this project specifically for the Panorama space invited by Fræme, contemporary art, Marseille. She produced works for the site, partly in residency at Villa Arson, Nice, Studio Ernan Design, Albisola (Italy) and in Marseille. Fondant is the first monograph of the artist in a French institution.

Durant la soirée de vernissage, l’espace fut activé par une nouvelle performance en continu, orchestrée par Zoe Williams en collaboration avec l’artiste performeuse Nadja Voorham et le musicien Vindicatrix, également producteur et compositeur de la pièce sonore pour l’exposition. Isosceles Lingerie a créé les éléments de costume pour la pièce.

Smears of the Night

La performance fut initiée par Zoe Williams et réalisée en collaboration avec Nadja Voorham. Le duo sont amies et entretiennent une relation professionnelle depuis leur rencontre lors d’un workshop autour de la théorie et de la pratique du BDSM tenu au PAF (Performing Arts Forum) à Saint Erme, France, en 2017.

Depuis, elles ont travaillé ensemble sur plusieurs projets dont Ceremony of the Void, 2017, DRAF, Londres, Ruffles, 2019, artmonte-carlo, Monaco et Sunday Fantasy, 2019, un film et exposition à la Mimosa House, Londres.

La performance a été conçue comme l’activation vivante de l’espace de Fondant pour la soirée de vernissage de l’exposition. Tout au long de la performance, les artistes ont cherché à entretenir le sentiment d’un monde synthétique, distant, et un ressenti de paranoïa et de claustrophobie.  Elles ont également voulu explorer les notions d’échange de pouvoir, de jeu, de soumission et de contrôle, ainsi que les charges érotiques qui existent dans celles-ci. Les personnages de la performance ont été pensés pour incarner et flouter des rôles archétypaux. L’idée de fondre a été explorée à la fois physiquement et métaphoriquement durant la pièce. Considérant les connotations du terme, dont le corps fondant, le soi fondant, le fait de fusionner l’un·e dans l’autre, mais aussi dans l’idée d’un « meltdown » mental.

Les personnages comprenaient une figure de majordome en costume noir, qui surveillait et tentait de contrôler l’espace, mais aussi était au service du personnage de l’héroïne glamour, à la fois captive et dirigeante de l’espace. Le personnage du chanteur était Vindicatrix, également compositeur et producteur de la pièce sonore accompagnant l’exposition et la performance, et apparaissait par intermittence pendant la scène pour livrer de courts couplets d’opéra sensuels. Le costume a été réalisé par Isosceles Lingerie et le maquillage par Xenab Lone Jamil.

During the opening evening, the space was activated by a new durational performance, orchestrated by Zoe Williams in collaboration with artist and performer Nadja Voorham and musician, Vindicatrix, who produced and composed the soundtrack for the space. Isosceles Lingerie also created costume elements for the piece.

‘Smears of the Night’

The performance was initiated by Zoe Williams and made in collaboration with Nadja Voorham. The pair are friends and have an ongoing working relationship since meeting at a BDSM Theory and practice workshop held at PAF (Performing Arts Forum) in Saint Erme, France in 2017.

Since this time, they have worked together on several projects, including; Ceremony of the Void, 2017, DRAF, London, Ruffles,2019, artmonte-carlo, Monaco and Sunday Fantasy, 2019, a film and exhibition at Mimosa House London.

The performance was conceived to be a live activation of the Fondant space on the opening evening of the exhibition. Through the performance the artists wanted to heighten the sense of a synthetic, insular world and a sense of paranoia and claustrophobia. They also wanted to explore notions of power exchange, play, submission and control and the erotic charges, that exist within this. The characters within the performance were conceived to embody and confuse certain archetypal roles. The motif of melting was explored both physically and metaphorically throughout the piece. Considering the terms connotations, through the melting of the body, the melting of self, the merging into one another and also of having a mental ‘meltdown’.

The characters consisted of an attendant figure dressed in a black suit, who monitored and tried to control the space, but also served the glamorous heroine character, who was both a captive and ruler of the space. The singer was Vindicatrix who also composed and produced the soundtrack for the exhibition and performance and appeared intermittently throughout the scene to deliver short operatic and sensual verses. The costume was made by Isosceles Lingerie and the make up by Xenab Lone Jamil.

Zoe Williams

(née en 1983) Vit et travaille entre l’Angleterre et la France

La pratique de Zoe Williams s’articule autour de plusieurs médiums dont l’image animée, la céramique, le dessin et la performance, elle s’appuie sur une démarche et une monstration souvent collaborative. Ces éléments se mêlent pour créer des objets immersifs et des environnements au sein desquels s’opère un échange à la fois espiègle et corrosif entre les notions d’érotisme, d’artisanat, de magie, de genre, d’hédonisme et d’excès. Ces influences se contaminent les unes les autres, permettant à l’artiste de provoquer des conversations sur les tensions du pouvoir, les politiques du sexe et les économies de production. Son travail explore la valeur changeante des objets et des rituels à travers l’histoire et au sein de la société contemporaine. La nourriture joue également un rôle important dans sa pratique, comme un outil pour l’échange, le dégoût et la sensualité.

Zoe Williams est représentée par la galerie Ciaccia Levi, Paris-Milan, et a travaillé avec diverses institutions nationales et internationales, notamment : Tate St-Ives, The Roberts Institute of Art, Londres, DCA, Dundee, Spike Island, Bristol, Dortmunder Kunstverein, Dortmund et Mimosa House, Londres, Le Credac, Paris et la Villa Arson, Nice.

Nadja Voorham (Pays-Bas/Suède) est une artiste et performeuse intéressée par le corps social et sa performance, en relation avec le regard. A travers la chorégraphie, la performance, l’image en mouvement et parfois le dessin et la sculpture, son travail recherche des états de flou. Nadja est diplômée de la Gerrit Rietveld Academie (PB) en 2012 et d’un Master au Royal College of Art (UK) en 2017. Son travail a été présenté dans des lieux tels que Art Rotterdam (PB), Mimosa House (UK), Chisenhale Art Place (UK), Weld (Suède) et le Notafe festival (Estonie). Elle reçoit la bourse d’étude danceWEB en 2016, le Mondriaan Fund Stipendium pour les Artistes Emergent·es en 2018 et une bourse du Swedish Arts Grants Committee en 2023.

Zoe Williams

(b. 1983) Lives and works between the UK and France

Her practice incorporates a range of mediums including moving image, ceramics, drawing and performance and is often collaborative in its process and outcome. These elements are combined to create immersive objects and environments, which conjure a playful and corrosive interchange between notions of the erotic, craft, magic, gender, hedonism and excess. Through the cross contamination of these concerns, she wishes to provoke conversations around the pressures of power, the politics of sex and the economics of production. Her work explores the shifting use values of objects and rituals through history and within contemporary society. Food also plays a prevalent role within her practice, as a tool for exchange, disgust, and sensuality.

She is represented by Ciaccia Levi Gallery, Paris-Milan, and has worked with a range of national and international institutions including; Tate St-Ives, The Roberts Institute of Art, London, DCA, Dundee, Spike Island, Bristol, Dortmunder Kunstverein, Dortmund and Mimosa House, London, Le Credac, Paris and Villa Arson, Nice.

Nadja Voorham

(NL/SE) is an artist and performer interested in the social body and its performance, in relation to the gaze. Through choreography, performance, moving image and occasionally drawing and sculpture, her work aims for states of limbo. Nadja received her BA Fine Arts in 2012 at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie (NL) and her MA Contemporary Art Practice in 2017 at the Royal College of Art (UK). Her work has been presented at places such as Art Rotterdam (NL), Mimosa House (UK), Chisenhale Art Place (UK), Weld (SE) and Notafe festival (EE). She received the danceWEB scholarship in 2016, the Mondriaan Fund Stipendium for Emerging Artists in 2018 and a working grant from The Swedish Arts Grants Committee in 2023.
